UT Brownsville has big enrollment increase

The University of Texas-Brownsville has one of the largest increases in enrollment of Texas schools of higher education this fall term over the same period last year, according to preliminay figures. A state District Court jury on Friday sentenced Olga Salazar to one year in prison and three years probation in connection with the death of her young daughter. Salazar, 39, of Brownsville, on Thursday had been found guilty by the jury of criminally negligent homicide and endangering a child. Outdoor burn ban extended again

The outdoor burn ban in Cameron County Thursday was extended for another month. That means no outdoor burning will be allowed at least until Nov. 26. Humberto Barrera, the county’s Emergency Managemant Officer, said Thursday that no permits will be given out during this period, adding anyone who violates the ban can and will be fined.
