THE REAL DEAL By JERRY DEAL This writer did not believe in getting too involved in Super Bowl 46 (don’t remember the Roman numerals), but in watching the mostly exciting game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots, it brought back so many memories of Super Bowls of past years. First off, I am no fan of the Giants, after all they seem to have pretty good control of the Dallas Cowboys these years, but I still am a NFC fan of the NFL over the AFC. I admit that I became really excited when the Eli Manning-led Giants came out strong and later sweated out the end, knowing how dangerous Tom Brady and the Patriots are. All that said, when it is brought up that this was the 46th Super Bowl, when you have been around as long as I have, you still say “damn, has it really been that long since the first game?” But, of course, it has been that long and some of us are still around to remember the beginning, which involved the then rival American Football League and the National Football League, It was not even called the Super Bowl right [...]

OK, ignore that previous message I have here (see below). Although every media outlet will have the fact that the New York Giants, behind quarterback Eli Manning — plus some really good defense — defeated the New England Patriots, 21-17 in the Super Bowl Sunday night, someone might not know and can find out here. FORGET ALL THIS BELOW: Myleadernews is NOT going to relay any information on the Super Bowl game and score. Why? It appears there are about 5,000 other outlets doing that and it would just be putting out information available almost anywhere. But, we are watching the game.

Reported taken were two pistols and two Boy Scout knives, Boswell reported the weapons were not his, but the knives were. Two other offices were also broken into. This makes the second time within six months that Boswell has been a burglary victim. His home was broken into last July and later two teens were arrested.

(UPDATE: Firefighters from Rio Hondo and other Cameron County cities on Saturday finished extinguishing the hot spots still burning. It’s also reported that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is to investigate the incident.) THE REAL DEAL By JERRY DEAL It certainly appears that the huge warehouse fire east of Rio Hondo Friday is another case of illegal dumping, this time involving storage of paint and chemicals placed in a building that was destructed by a huge fire of the warehouse in the boondocks east of Rio Hondo. It also questions how well the dumps and storage facilities are being checked. (We do remember the mammoth tire fire near San Benito.) Not only did the storage of those items present danger to residents, how about the kids attending the nearby Las Yescas Elementary School? I wonder, if the information received, including the fact this company reportedly has previously been fined for illegal containment of chemicals — plus recent complaints by area residents — where were the federal and state invironmental parts of the governments in this situation? I would hope that now an investigation is imminent by those perhaps negligent state and federal officials into why certain hazardous items were [...]

Harlingen is among South Texas and Valley cities which are schdeulded to get a Corner Bakery Cafe, but the first one to be built will be in McAllen, early this year. Corner Bakery cafes are popular fast casual dine in, to go and catering ventures, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are 121 company-owned and franchises in 14 states, from New York to California. The company is headquartered in Dallas and there are presently 23 restaurants in the state. They include restaurants in the Dallas area, San Antonio, Houston, Tyler, Fort Worth and El Paso. The company reported that Monterrey restaurant entrepreneur Bernardo Castillon will open franchise resturants in seven Texas locations, with the first onein McAllen, followed by Harlingen, Brownsville, Corpus Christi and Laredo. The company also is community-minded and gives back. Its major project is called Share Our Strength “No Kid Hungry,” which is pretty much self-explained.

THE REAL DEAL By JERRY DEAL “The Daily Report with Col. Ray” was an opinionated, controversial and popular radio show. Apparently is was also hated — and by someone with some influence. U.S. Army (Ret.) Col. Ray Coughenour, who played host for the show, has been fired, Myleadernews learned Friday. That is sad, because he is being let go by that corporation, apparently because he stepped on too many people’s toes. No freedom of speech allowed there! Coughenour confirmed he has been fired, but declined to state more. However, in a Thursday evening e-mail report to many people, he stated, “It seems some people in the Rio Grande Valley do not appreciate people getting in their dirty business dealings. As of today, I have been terminated by the radio station, so good luck, Valley, you will need it.” KURV management so far has declined to comment. The station is one of seven owned by BMP (Border Media Partners) in the Valley and one of many operated in Texas, including Dallas (headquarters there too), San Antonio, Laredo and Austin areas. I know that one of the San Antonio stations is KTSA-FM, also a talk show station. The company reportedly had some [...]

(EDITOR’S NOTE: For you who follow the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and the rest of the North American League, here is a bit of information on what has been happening with the expansion of the league’s southern division.) (From a press release) The league announced Thursday that the Abilene Prairie Dogs will play in the 2012 season. The new Prairie Dogs franchise takes its name from the old Abilene pro team that played in the independent Texas-Louisiana League from 1995-1999. “The Prairie Dogs were in Abilene during the 1990s, and were very successful,” part owner Byron Pierce said. “When their lease expired they moved to San Angelo and became the Colts, but Abilene has alwaqys been a good market. We can’t wait to bring the Prairie Dogs back.” With the addition of the Prairie Dogs, there are nowsix teams in the NAL southern division. The Prairie Dogs join the San Angelo Colts, Fort Worth Cats, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, Edinburg Roadrunners and the McAllen Thunder. This year the Prairie Dogs will play their home games at Walt Driggers Field on the campus of McMurry University. A deal is in the works to construct a new ballpark in Abilenr for the [...]
