UTB faculty, staff observes MLK Day
Faculty and staff of the University of Texas Brownsville will participate in the second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday.
There will be no classes at the university on Monday.
Volunteers will gather at 8 a.m. Monday at Dean Porter Park for registraiton, coffee and donuts. After all participants have their project assignments, they will leave for their respectrive service locations at about 8:45 a.m.
Participants will assist 23 local nonprofit organizations in a variety of service projects, among thdm cleaning and repairing trails at Sabel Palm Grove Audubon Sanctuary, building a butterfly garden at Monica’s House, cleaning up graffiti around the city, playing games qnd making crafts with nursing home residents and reading with families at Brownsville Literacy Center.
At about noon, teams will return to the park for the MLK Fair to learn about the life of King, segration, discrimination and related topics. Interactive activities and entertainment will maintain the festive mood and lunch will be be provided.
Dr. Marilyn Woods, executive assitant to UTB President Juliet Garcia, is scheduled to address the group, and the program will close at 2 p.m.
