Hushen wants to be city commissioner again
Longtime Harlingen policeman and former city commissioner Tom Hushen Friday filed to seek the District 3 position, which he held from 2007-2009.
It earlier had been speculated that Hushen was going to seek the position to fill the vacancy left by Kori Marra, who was removed as commissioner.
The special election will be held on March 16 and another election for a full three-year term will need to be held in November.
Hushen was a policeman for 15 years, rising to the position of lieutenant before resigning and taking duties with Cameron County.
He presently is regional administrator of the Regional Advisory Council Trauma and is helping hospitals in the region be prepared for disasters, He oversees the newly created Emergency Medical Task ?Force 11, which is comprised of emergency response partners from Cameron County to Webb County along the border and up to Nueces County along the Gulf Coast.
He also was appointed to the Governors EMS and Trauma Advisory Council’s Disaster Committee in 2010.
He is the second person to state their candidacy for the District 3 post.
He was defeated by former Commissioner Marra, who recently had to vacate her position when convicted of conflict of interest charges.
He said he is looking forward to the campaign and continuing his service to the residents of the city. He also said District 3 needs a commissioner that isd working to make life better for district and the city as a whole.
Thank God there is hope.
John only if we help him with finances and take people out to vote and make sure they are aware of voting time. If need be get them a ride. Please do not forget money is needed to fund this campaign.

Tom Hushen is a really fine individual and a leader. He would be an asset on the city commission, as he was before. He has my vote and my help.
Tom is a decent and intelligent man, but I’m supporting Mike Mezmar as I believe him to be the better candidate in this day and age. Plus Tom was just a little too friendly with Leftwich when he served before. We need a true independent thinker and not someone out to settle scores. Look out if Dial starts throwing money Tom’s direction.
Yup, DD won’t like Mezmar because he can’t stand people that are smarter than him.
Smart how? More money or traveled more or helped the boys and girls club more? How is he smart did he invent the Internet? What makes him smart does he work? Is he a rocket scientist? Brain surgeon? Have you ever sat and talked to Dial or the mezmerasier?

Gee, Sally, why am I not surprised you are allying with Mike Mezmar, who is pals with those certain people, including Chris Boswell, Jay Meade, Bobby Farris and Kori Marra. That is why I like Tom Hushen, because he is truly independent. Just because he voted on some things the same as Robert Leftwich does not necessarily mean he is a friend. After all, check it out, Marra and Leftwich voted the same many times down the years. Let’s see who puts up money for him.

Mike will do PRECISELY what he thinks is best for Harlingen; he is beholden to no one.

Jay Mead a blast from the past. Part of the good old boys. He made some money off of the Danny Boy campaign. No doubt whose side he is on. There is a fine example of how the boyz keep the money in the same circle.
I don’t believe Mike Mezmar knows Boswell, Mead or Marra. He may have met Farris at a church function but I wouldn’t say they are friends.
Tom Hushen is in a for a big fight and the Old Guard will be backing up Mike Mezmar. They need to win this race. If not their efforts on Danny Castillo will be wasted. Hushen won’t have the financial support that Mezmar has so he better have a hard working support team. The good thing for Hushen is name recognition. Mezmar has been in hibernation for years and he will only be known in his social circles which include the rotary club for rednecks and the controversial chamber of commerce. Both of these organizations are controlled by the old guard. The front page color VMS ad for Danny Castillo ran $300 a day. I will give the edge to the old guard candidate at 52% unless Hushen has a strong support team.
Oh Sally, how many idiots voted for the annexation even though they knew it was not being done right? I know for a FACT that Hushen and Leftwich were against it because they knew the city could not deliever on what was required.
Just look at what Hushen is currently in charge of. It does not take a brain scientist to know that he can easily take care of the constituents in District 3.

And speaking of Bible Thumpers,take heed David. Supporting wrongdoing is just as bad as being the wrongdoer. When you support a puppet that is all about special interest and not the community as a whole. You are just as guilty as the Puppeteer. The puppet has already failed his constiuents in District 1 by going against the LAW.
Tom Hushen is the best candidate for city commissioner. My daughter was needing help and Tom helped her out of the kindness of his heart. He didn’t have to help her but he did. Vote Tom Hushen for good government.
Go Mike Mezmar for District 3! You will have plenty of support from all sectors of the community. I look forward to your victory celebration and swearing-in ceremony!

The trick is to get out and vote. Tom is the best Candidate but we are against the people who want the old system back of conflict of interest of doing what ever they want when they want with out regard of the citizens of Harlingen. This is a sick town with a few rich boys running it. These guys like to beat up children.

I live in District 3 and I will sincerely say that both candidates are nice guys. They are both educated and either one will be a good city commissioner unless….Mike Mezmar or Tom Hushen are controlled puppets and are not independent thinkers. They need to look at the issues at hand.
Tom Hushen has the edge over Mezmar with his prior experience and name recognition. Mezmar as I anticipate will be supported by the Old Guard with big money. The stakes are too high for Mezmar to lose and the other side realizes the same thing for Hushen. The remnants of a disorganized group will have to come together for Hushen to win and I don’t believe he will get the financial support that may be needed to win the position. PS: I am trying to plan a formal protest against the Mayor’s State of the City address that will be held on January 27, 2012. The Rotary Club of Harlingen is hosting the event at the Reese Building.
