MOODY RETURNING TO WHITEWINGS

Team Signs Six Strikeout Pitchers

Harlingen – United League Baseball’s Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed six pitchers, including left-hander Jason Moody (5-11, 175, Spartanburg Methodist College), who pitched for the WhiteWings in 2002.

Moody split 2002 between the WhiteWings and the Alexandria Aces, going 0-1 with a 2.02 ERA for the WhiteWings. In 13 relief appearances, he recorded eight saves while striking out 13 and walking four in 13.1 innings. For his career, the Charlotte, North Carolina-native is 14-21 with a 3.95 ERA. In 221 games (18 starts), he’s allowed 370 hits in 358.1 innings to go with 301 strikeouts. The 33-year old last pitched for the 2007 United League Champion Alexandria Aces, for whom he also opened the season as the pitching coach.

Moody is joined by right-handers Wilton Garcia (6-1, 185), Freddy Ballestas (6-3, 170), Miguel Matos (6-4, 178), Luis Montano (6-0, 180) and Andres Rosales (6-0, 140).

 A 25-year old out of Monte Cristo, Dominican Republic, Garcia pitched in the Detroit Tigers’ system in 2007 and 2008, splitting time between the Gulf Coast League Tigers (Gulf Coast League, Class R), Oneonta (New York-Penn League, Class Low A) and West Michigan (Midwest League, Class A), going 13-5 with a 3.89 ERA in 73 relief appearances.

 A 23-year old out of Caracas, Venezuela, Ballestas holds a career-record of 5-8 with a 5.84 ERA while striking out 117 in 117.2 innings in 34 games (19 starts) over last two years for Williamsport (New York-Penn League), Clearwater (Florida State League, Class A Advanced) and Lakewood (South Atlantic League, Class A) of the Philadelphia Phillies organization.

 A 22-year old out of Azua, Dominican Republic, Matos has a career-record of 20-14 with a 3.12 ERA. In 54 games (25 starts), he has pitched 190.2 innings, recording 182 strikeouts compared to 58 walks. Montano has pitched the last four seasons in the Phillies organization in the Dominican Summer League, Gulf Coast League, New York-Penn League (Williamsport) and Florida State League (Clearwater).

 A 25-year old out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Montano has a career-record of 30-32 with a 4.40 ERA. In 88 games (71 starts), he has pitched 401.2 innings, striking out 288 in the Cincinnati Reds organization with the Gulf Coast Red (Gulf Coast League), Dayton (Midwest League), Billings (Pioneer League, Class R), Sarasota (Florida State League, Class A Advanced) and Carolina (Southern League, Class AA).

 A 21-year old out of Barranquilla, Colombia, Rosales has a career-record of 7-7 with a 3.91 ERA. In 58 games (15 starts), he has pitched 138.2 innings, striking out 152 in the St. Louis Cardinals system with Johnson City (Appalachian League, Class R Advanced), Gulf Coast Cardinals (Gulf Coast League), Quad Cities (Midwest League) and Batavia (New York-Penn League)

 The WhiteWings open the 2010 season against Laredo Broncos on Thursday, May 27 at Veterans Field. The WhiteWings’ home opener is on Saturday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. against the Edinburg Roadrunners at Harlingen Field. The WhiteWings will also host the Roadrunners in an 11:05 a.m. exhibition game on Monday, May 24.

 The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fifth season, the United League is gearing up for a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo.
